Sample Course Schedule.

Monday

10-11 am

Social Skills

This course will take place in a morning meeting format. Participants will have the opportunity to greet, share, and learn about topics related to social skills, conflict resolution, health, hygiene, or friendship. We will also discuss the schedule for the upcoming week’s events.

1-2 pm

Functional Academics - Reading

This course will focus on functional reading skills (schedules, instructions, menus, grocery lists, safety signs) in a variety of formats.

3-4 pm

Leisure / Rec Skills - Music

This course will involve instruction in singing, dancing, and various rhythm activities. Music can be used in a variety of ways to energize, calm, or motivate and we will explore how it can be utilized in daily life.

Tuesday

10-11 am

Mindfulness

This course will focus on how to be calm and present during activities of daily life.  We will learn different strategies to stay calm, centered, and focused when completing tasks or working in groups.  We will also discuss topics related to behavior management and develop a list of coping strategies to utilize at home or work.

1-2 pm

Functional Academics - Math

This course will focus on functional math skills (menu reading, tax, tip, calculator use, money counting, budgeting) in a variety of formats.

3-4 pm

Leisure / Rec Skills - Craft / Cooking Activity

This course will follow the calendar of upcoming holidays or seasons. Participants will make a craft or a simple food item that is appropriate for the time of year. We will make things to decorate apartments or give as gifts. When we cook, class attendants will learn to make things that they can independently prepare in their own apartments.

Thursday

10-11 am

Vocational / Employability Skills

This course will reinforce work appropriate attitudes, dress, and behaviors.  Participants will learn about various jobs and the skills needed to be successful at them.  They will also complete a basic resume, strength inventory, and practice interviewing.

1-2 pm

Functional Academics - Life Skills Task Cards

This course will focus on functional life skills (sign reading, menu ordering, sorting, sizing, matching, operating appliances) in a variety of formats.

3-4 pm

Leisure / Rec Skills - Cards / Games / Special Activity

This course will focus on how to play specific card and board games. We will also cover how to be a good winner or loser, taking turns, and being patient. We will also have special activities in this class such as BINGO, birthday celebrations, event planning, and circle games.

Hours of 12-2 pm will be used for individual resident / staff instruction, specific skill instruction in apartments, or small group chats / conflict resolution.
